The Magical Unicorn of the Drainpipe

A flash of hot pink and white buried in the dirt inside a drain pipe. I reach in and discover a treasure.

Ok, well, it’s a piece of junk on the one hand, but it’s also buried treasure on the other when I immediately recognize it as a metaphor.

This little flash of pink from a unicorn’s mane with a poor broken horn and missing body and legs. A metaphor for what?

Metaphors are yearning to be seen. Discovered. When they arrive, they hit the soul with a feeling like YES!!!!

The world is full of those who will insist you stay small, broken, invisible, and silent. That’s their oppressors working through them seeking to oppress you, too. But the good news is that real anti-oppression work—internal and external—is transformative for everyone.

To the unicorns who have been through the drainpipe, you are an unstoppable force of nature. No matter what you’ve been through, or where you are on your journey, you are a magical creature.

And to those who make no peace with oppression, I offer my unwavering, open-hearted, and full-throated gratitude for helping me come out of the drainpipe too.
